Choosing the right hardwood involves balancing aesthetics, durability, and budget. Here’s what every trade professional should consider.
Species Selection
European White Oak remains the most popular choice for its durability and neutral tone. American Walnut offers rich warmth for statement spaces. Hickory provides unmatched hardness for high-traffic areas.
Engineered vs. Solid
Engineered hardwood offers superior dimensional stability, making it ideal for radiant heat and below-grade installations. Solid hardwood can be refinished more times but requires a more controlled environment.
Grade & Finish
Select grade offers a clean, uniform look while character grade embraces natural knots and variations. Pre-finished products save time on site, while sand-and-finish allows for custom color matching.
Width & Pattern Considerations
Wide planks (7–10 inches) create a luxurious, open feel and are the current market preference. Herringbone and chevron patterns add visual interest but require more material and labor. Always order 10–15% overage for patterns.
