The engineered vs. solid hardwood debate isn’t about which is better — it’s about which is right for the specific application.
When to Specify Engineered
Engineered hardwood is the clear choice for: below-grade installations (basements), over radiant heat systems, in humid climates, and when wider plank widths (8–10 inches) are desired. Its cross-layer construction resists expansion and contraction.
When to Specify Solid
Solid hardwood is ideal for: on-grade and above-grade installations, when multiple future refinishing cycles are expected, and for reclaimed or specialty species only available in solid form. Solid planks can be refinished 4–7 times over their lifetime.
Installation Methods
Solid hardwood is typically nail-down only, requiring a plywood subfloor. Engineered offers more flexibility: glue-down, nail-down, or floating installation. This flexibility often reduces installation time and cost.
